[Adelaide] Lunch at the Pickled Duck

The wedding we were in Adelaide to attend was being held at Sfera’s Park Suites and Convention Centre and we were staying there for convenience. However it meant we did not have easy access to the abundance of dining options in the city, but the wedding couple suggested Pickled Duck was around the corner for the hungry.

Since the wedding wasn’t till later that afternoon, we trooped down to Pickled Duck for lunch.

Pickled Duck looked modern, sleek with plenty of space to spare. Their outdoor deck provided a really lovely atmosphere overlooking Civic Park, but it was too cold for our troupe and we perched ourselves at one of their large benches. I found the bag hooks a very thoughtful touch.

The menu at Pickled Duck was largely pub grub – burgers and pizzas being the mainstays – with a slightly pricier tag, though not ridiculous. It was appropriately reflective of the establishment. Orders were placed up the front and drinks were ordered at a separate counter in front of the bar. It was a busy Saturday, so it took awhile for our meals to be delivered to the table – but not unreasonably so.

I’m not normally a burger fanatic – what’s so special about a patty between two bits of bread? However too many restaurants and eateries have turned the humble simple burger into Franken-creations, so it was refreshing to see a number of classic burgers on Pickled Duck‘s menu.

My Aussie Prime came with a juicy medium beef pattie with beetroot relish (not too sweet), a slice of melted cheese and of course, fresh lettuce and tomato. It fit comfortably in my hands and the burger bun didn’t get soaked through with juices, which is a big plus.

Girlfriend Sassystrawberry ordered the pork salad and it was huge! Lots of pulled pork was hidden beneath the tower of rocket and red Spanish onion. For sweetness and crunch with a balance of salt, the salad also had pear and walnuts, shaved parmesan in an apple cider vinaigrette.

The other salad on the menu that caught my eye was the duck salad – shredded duck tossed with roasted beetroot, Spanish red onion, Danish feta and baby spinach leaves in a cherry balsamic dressing.

Pickled Duck‘s pizzas come in either 9″ or 12″, so you don’t have to weigh up stuffing yourself silly or taking leftovers home. The SO had a Hawaiian – simply shaved leg ham with pineapple and mozzarella. The base wasn’t wafer thin, but it was well cooked in the center. A stiff slice that doesn’t flop limply when you bring it your mouth is always a plus.

And just because we could, we also ordered one of the many Pickled Duck kid’s meals for Bubby. Unfortunately he had fallen asleep by the time the food arrived, but he still loved it when he had it hours later for dinner.
