Good Food and Wine Show – Not Another Cheese & Wine Matching

The Good Food and Wine Show is back for another year at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre this weekend!

I was invited by Liquid Ideas as a guest of Dan Murphy’s Discovery Zone, where I attended the Not Another Cheese & Wine Matching session yesterday.

The Discovery Zone is a new section this year and looked very popular, with Saturday sessions already sold out. Each hour long session sits approximately 40 attendees.

During yesterday’s matching session, we met Dan Murphy‘s Business Manager Fine Wine Peter Nixon, owner of Myrtleford Butter Factory Naomi, and owner of Bruny Island Cheese Nick.

While each talked about the origins and characteristics of their companies and products, we dug into the sampling.

They weren’t kidding when they titled this ‘not another cheese and wine matching’. There was a butter, buttermilk, armagnac and sherry on offer – not the kinds of things one might expect at a wine and cheese tasting.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing! I adored the Myrtleford Butter Factory’s smoked salt butter – I missed out on their truffle butter last year and won’t be making that mistake again this year. Matched to this silky cultured butter was a Santa Margherita Pinot Grigrio, a crisp clean Italian number that is so reasonably priced at AUD$16 a bottle, it’s on my shopping list.

And while Bruny Island Cheese’s Nanna’s Undies (it’s a great 2 month old cheese with a giggle-worthy backstory) was the most interesting with its crust of herbes de Provence (matched with Tariquet VSOP Armagnac), it was their Tom cheese that did it for me – a sharp hard cheese in the tradition of the Tomme cheese of France and matched with Barbadillo Principe Amontillado.

If beer is more your thing, there is the Dan Murphy’s Beer & Cider Hall. There are a couple of Sunday sessions still available, but don’t blink! Those look to be selling out quickly.

So if you haven’t got plans this weekend, visit Good Food and Wine Show website for more information on sessions and tickets.
