The Gettin’ Place

I really want to love the Gettin’ Place. It’s a quirky hole-in-the-wall cafe with a simple menu just beyond the crazy bustle of James Street with a gorgeous garden back area for dog lovers and pram pushers, so there is lots to love.

I love their coffee. They use Toby’s Estate beans, so my skinny lattes have always been smooth and full-bodied.

And I want to smoother their amazingly friendly staff with giant hugs. They are warm and inviting.

Their menu might be simple – their kitchen is tiny afterall, but the food is tasty. It’s served as it would at grandma’s on a Sunday, unpretentiously and with the belief in the taste itself. The cheapest thing you could get is the toast (sourdough) with your choice of condiment (Vegemite, honey, peanut butter or strawberry jam) for AUD$4-5. Or you could splash out on their Gettin’ Beans, a slow cooked variety of beans in a rich tomato and thyme sauce, served with garlic cheesey toast fingers and a boiled egg for AUD$14 and add ham for AUD$2.

But AUD$13 for one slice of bread with one egg, 2 small pieces of ham and a bit of relish? I wished there was more, because it was deliciously buttered and toasted. I just cannot justify the price tag for that menu item.
