Shutter & Brew

Shutter & Brew combines two great loves – coffee and photography. Located in on a quiet suburban street in Wavell Heights, this quaint little gem of a cafe oozes a rustic charm that promises a relaxing treat.

For the avid photographer, Shutter & Brew showcases a collection of framed photographs on its walls that certainly help time past quickly as you’re waiting for your order. Next to the order counter, you could even be tempted by the selection of handmade camera straps – or if you have a little one who doesn’t love the camera yet, a camera buddy you could fit around your lens to give them a friendly ‘face’.

While you’re certainly welcome to sit outside to soak up a little sunshine, the street was quiet, so there wasn’t a lot to people-watch. Inside there were plenty of seating options and I especially liked the long communal table that dominated the middle of the cafe.

Like I’ve mentioned before, I’m a coffee slut and am not a loyalist when it comes to coffee (though I will not touch International Roast’s instant coffee if my life depended on it). With that said, Shutter & Brew made the most amazing skinny latte I have ever tasted, and I’ve drunk a lot of skinny lattes. I don’t know if it’s the amazing touch of the barista or the beans they get from Clearskin Coffee Co, but holy moley! I could actually taste NOTES in my coffee.

Even the Benchmark Coldpress coffee rocked my world. It was milky, but not overly, and sweetened, but not sickeningly so. I definitely want to get me more of those.

Ham and cheese croissant

Avo on corn bread. AUD$9.50

Apparently everything in the cabinet is made on premises and if the ham and cheese croissant was anything to go by, Shutter & Brew definitely know how to throw together a tasty meal.

That said, I much preferred the avo on corn bread, a kaleidoscope garden of creamy mashed avocado dotted with dollops of golden relish and oh-so-good kewpie mayonnaise, all sprinkled with dukkah. Squeeze a splash of fresh zingy lemon over the soft lightly toasted corn bread and you have possibly one of the best breakfasts/morning teas ever!
