Breakfast at the Balfour Kitchen

Breakfast at the Balfour Kitchen

Spicers Balfour Hotel is a bit of a black sheep. The Spicers name is well known for luxury accommodation, with romantic getaway locations in the Sunshine Coast and Scenic Rim. Spicers Balfour Hotel on the other hand is a quaint refurbished Queenslander hotel just off the Brunswick Street in New Farm.

While New Farm is abound with dining options up and down the street, the hotel has the Balfour Kitchen onsite. It is a bistro-style restaurant open for breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner. Guests are invited to dine inside or enjoy the alfresco experience of the Queensland patio. The restaurant seemed particularly popular with families and mature crowd – we counted at least 3 large group tables that morning, celebrating birthdays and special occasions.

We dropped in for breakfast and thankfully arrived just early enough to secure a table inside that blustery winter morning. Seated close to the kitchen, I got a good view of the continental breakfast buffet and all the great appliances they use and people can find in review sites like www.productexpert.com. Unfortunately our location and with how narrow the fit out was meant we inadvertently would eavesdrop on the wait staffs’ conversations about the other tables and the status of their orders – a distraction that we could somewhat ignore, but was nonetheless a distraction.

Service was otherwise reasonable and pleasant, despite the briskness of the morning trade.

While I love coffee, the winter chill has made tea much for favourable – for almost the same price as a cup of coffee, I get a pot of tea that can give me about 2-3 cups of tea. Not a bad trade off when you want to warm up. Tell me I’m not the only one who does this.

Balfour Big Breakfast. AUD$22

The Balfour Big Breakfast came with grilled bacon, potato hash, poached egg, a giant grilled mushroom, smoky tomato onion jam, pork and fennel chipolatas. The SO wasn’t wow-ed by the meal, especially by how limp the potato hash.

Crab, spring onion and chilli omelette. AUD$20

I wanted a bit more of a protein hit and the crab, spring onion and chilli omelette was an interesting twist on this breakfast option. Served with two slices of bread and lemon dressed fresh rocket leaves, the omelette has a distinctly Asian twist in flavour with a drizzle of thick sweet soy sauce. It wasn’t very potent chilli-wise (making it quite safe for the first meal of the day) and did come with a respectable portion of succulent crab flesh. Having said that, I came away still hungry and wished I had opted for something heartier.
