Breakfast at Samson and Sophie Cafe and Deli

Breakfast at Samson and Sophie Cafe and Deli

I have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to drop in at Samson and Sophie Café and Deli in Teneriffe. Every time we’ve passed them by, there is always a crowd of eagerly yet very patient customers waiting for available tables.

And from what I heard in the foodie sphere has been encouraging, yet I don’t believe I had such high expectations to be let down so cruelly when we were finally able to make our visit.

It started well enough – we were ushered to an available table that had some protection from the harsh bright late morning rays. Comfort might not have been very high on the agenda when Samson and Sophie Café and Deli went furniture shopping, but their eclectic collection of mismatched vintage pieces at least lend a convincing shabby chic adorability that attracts the hipster in the hip. Coffees and service were swift, so kudos on the barista and the staff.

Cuca Sardines- poached egg, sourdough and seasoned rocket. AUD$16.90

Frankly I was very disappointed with my breakfast choice – the Cuca Sardines. What arrived on a lacquered board was a sardine tin with its lid half peeled back to reveal the tightly packed silver fish, a slice of toast liberally pre-oiled and sliced diagonally in half to provide the illusion it was more than it was, a poached egg, a wedge of fresh lemon and a small bowl of olive oil dressed salad leaves.

Apparently this breakfast came with options: lemon, chilli oil or olive oil. I requested for chilli, but what was served had nothing even remotely related to chilli. In fact, I’m not sure what flavoured sardine they gave me. There were about 3 small cloves and 2 thinly sliced dices of carrots tucked in with the fish, but if they were there to impart flavour, they had failed their job miserably.

For AUD$16.90, I had expected a little more finesse and a touch more bulk.

Breakfast at Samson and Sophie Cafe and Deli - Our House Cook Up. AUD$18.90

Our House Cook Up. AUD$18.90

The SO fared far better with his choice of their House Cook Up, which came with bacon, poached eggs, haloumi, roasted tomato, sausage and organic sourdough and relish. The sausage was heavily spiced and he left satisfied till well into dinnertime.

Having left disappointed, I would be hesitant to visit again… and I most definitely wouldn’t be ordering the sardines again.
