Beach Burrito Company

Mexican food hit the Brisbane scene in a big way the last couple of years and what’s not to love?! The cuisine is packed with flavour and spice hits, and loaded with fresh ingredients like tomatoes and coriander, is quite healthy.

The SO and I have tried a couple of places and thus far, Guzman y Gomez’s barramundi burrito bowl has remained our favourite. Slathered with extra spicy sauce, of course. But Beach Burrito Company is a lot closer than the nearest Guzman y Gomez outlet, so we walked down to check them out over the weekend.

I don’t even remember what business used to be where Beach Burrito Company is now, but what Beach Burrito Company have done with the place is a million times better. They have created a chill tropical explosion of colour and artifacts that have that instant kitsch appeal of Mexican holidays with the potential to go awry (think From Dusk Till Dawn or Come Out And Play), and if you push further back, they have a great outdoor seating area out back. It might not be sand between your toes (in fact, I highly recommend NOT kicking off your shoes), but it comes pretty darn close.

But what about the menu?

Let’s just say it was full-on! The A3 card with its centre-fold was chockers with options, such as nachos, quesadillas, burritos, sangria, and some very cute illustrations. I particularly liked the taco chip daring the reader to ‘bite me’ ala Bart Simpson.

So what caught my eye? When I saw Beach Burrito Company had jalapeno poppers on their menu, I got really excited. The ones I had first sampled at Chilliwow were the bomb and I was really eager to see if these would be just as good or perhaps even better.

The verdict: I was disappointed. While Beach Burrito Company’s jalapenos have a slightly spicier kick and are bigger in size than the ones at Chilliwow, I found them too big and filled with too full of cream. Perhaps they’d be ok if you’re having copious amounts of beer to tackle the cream, but otherwise it mellowed the jalapeno flavour too much and felt much too rich.

What about the rest of our meal?

The burrito bowl came with a burrito shaped and deep-fried into a bowl. And it was massive! That’s the receptacle for a mess of contents, including a heap of shredded red cabbage, slightly gluggy rice, beans and the SO’s choice of pulled pork. What was missing was the tomato salsa and cheese mentioned in the menu. Dig as much as we did, they weren’t there. Had the burrito bowl consumed it prior to its arrival at the table?

If so, then my tacos might be guilty of a disappearing act as well. Thankfully the described tomato, cheese and coriander were all present and accounted for in my lime chilli garlic prawn with mango and pineapple salsa tacos. But wait a minute… the wedge of lime was missing. Had it been the only ingredient in our meal that had gone AWOL, I probably wouldn’t have noticed nor cared a hoot. The prawns and mango salsa had plenty of flavour. But why list something on the menu to only forget about it when dishing up?

Did we ask for those missing ingredients? No, the SO had enough to tackle in his burrito bowl, though the addition of some crisp tomatoes might have helped ease the richness from the pork. Beach Burrito Company was also counter order and the people we saw on staff appeared more intent on chatting with the kitchen staff than checking in on customers at the tables.

Our guess is if you’re looking for a great place to chill with friends and some beers, you’re not too fussed about the food, AND you wanna get away from the main Valley strip, then Beach Burrito Company is a contender. But if you’re just looking for some honest blow-your-socks-off Mexican food, then your quest might not over yet, amigo.
