A New Direction For One Eleven – One Eleven Modern Grill

How time flies – One Eleven has now turned one! And to celebrate its first birthday, the restaurant and its team have decided to push the envelope a little further by reinventing its concept and menu into a modern grill. How much has it changed and what can customers expect now?

My day’s special – the 220gm wagyu sirloin steak served with ponzu sauce – was very possibly one of the best steaks I’ve had, especially when washed down with a gentle Barossa Valley shiraz. Served sliced and ready to go, dipping the medium rare meat into the ponzu helped cut through the fattiness (marble score of 9!).

The day’s grilled fish was swordfish, a dense white flesh with impressive diamond char marks. One might expect a dry piece of overcooked fish in inexperienced hands, but this is One Eleven. They know what they’re doing.

The sides are quite generous and each is portioned to be shared between two, so order accordingly. We definitely could’ve done without one of the sides, but I would be pained to decide which of them to give up. The roast pumpkin was that day’s special and was soft to the point the skins could be eaten as well, while the fresh organic green bean salad with almonds was a delightful crunchy contrast. If you hate boiled brussel sprouts, this tastes NOTHING like that and I highly recommend you give it a try.

But that’s what the One Eleven Modern Grill’s new concept and menu is all about – building your own meal from a range of proteins and fresh sides that go well beyond chips and frozen peas. This is one of those meals that does well for the selfish and the family-style diners alike.

The SO said he couldn’t leave without trying the chocolate fondant, so we shared. Dark chocolate lava oozing from a thinly cracked shell is a decadent treat. It helped that none of the components are teeth stingingly sweet, so indulge!

Head chef Mathias Andersson has sold me on their slow cooked lamb shoulder (serves two), which we will have to come back to try. Marinated with herbs and then slow cooked before being finished off on the grill for that gorgeous char, what’s not to love?
