What’s in our mini box? Food Connect 2011 Week 14

The SO’s grandfather was in town this week from Perth and despite it being mid-week, we absolutely had to catch up with him. The last time we saw the SO’s grandfather was at our wedding, where he played the bagpipes for us down the wedding aisle.

The man now runs a successful hobby farm in his retirement, growing apples (pink ladies and Fujis), cherries and marron (Cherax tenuimanus), which he sells via the various co-ops he and other farmers in his region were a part of. We mentioned Food Connect and the model they use to get farmers and consumers more connected, and as a grower, he was impressed by the logistical coordination and community building efforts in bringing the food to consumers direct.

What he was more impressed with was how much more goes to the farmers from the consumer price of the fruit and vegetables.

Perhaps there are Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) he can have a look at. I could only find one in Perth: Mimsbrook Biodynamic / Organic Food Store. Do you know of a Perth based CSA?
